DUA

DUA, Nowi Swiat 19, named after Gershon DUA. It was a Jewish Theatre (in the Yiddish language). The theatre house was Jewish property. I heard it was recently re-opend. The first play I saw there was "Ha'Dibbuk", played by famous actor Ida Kamiska. DUA had plays such as: two Konillemel, Shalom Aleichem's plays, Ha'Dibbuk, DJigan and Shumacher.

Above the theatre – there was a place where theatre courses were held, along rehearsals of a quire, dance company, mandolin orchestra, wind instruments orchestra - he Played the trumpet in this orchestra for 10 years. They represented the city in concerts at many places all over Poland.
The DUA was a marginal thing for us, although we used to have parties there over Saturdays.
In the club there (above the theatre hall) were chairs, and someone used to play live music, or the gramophone played. We used to dance Rock 'n roll (Elvis), Marino Marini and many different kinds of music. I remember the Russian composer Dunajewski music.

The theatre stopped working in late 50's (when most of the Jews left Poland, in 1956-7).

General – life in Legnica, and Jewish life in Legnica

Cultural life ware very much developed during that time in Legnica (40's-50's).
Most of our lives there were concentrated in the Jewish primary school (school number 7). Everyone were Jewish there – staff, teachers and pupils. We didn't have much relation Poles during primary school. Later on in high school we did.
There were Kibutzzim in the town, socialistic oriented: Gordonia, Mizrahi, Ha'shomer Ha'tzair and more. Itzik – was in a Polish youth movement, it socialistic oriented.
During '46-'48 most of the Jews have left the town. In December 1946, 3200 Jews lived in Legnica. At the pick 8000 Jews lived there.
Many factories for Jews were established there ("cooperatives"), owned by Jews.
